For years my focus has been purely on abstracts, inspired by the most enduring things in my life, such as the ocean, waves and my homestead in Ucluelet, on the wild pacific west coast of Vancouver Island, BC. I’ve also been hugely preoccupied by the flashiest aspects of urban existence, such as fashion, and the new trends or colours for the season and these shiny distractions have worked their way into my paintings over the years.

Recently however, I’ve to returned to painting frank, representational objects as well as images that inspire me. In my next show, titled, “In the Mix”, I’m attempting exactly that, portraying both meaningful representational images and adding autobiographical elements, while also continuing my love affair with the purely abstract.

“In the Mix” reveals a multitude of elements I’m that have personal meaning to me and my mixed Canadian heritage, that being half Japanese and half European. Each image has a personal story behind it, so please ask me its significance.
